All the art I enjoyed in October 2025
After a very hot summer, October was the first autumnal month to bring us some rain and crunchy leaves. I was definitely in the mood for media that made me want to curl up on the couch with a blanket. Here is an overview of different art I engaged with and enjoyed this month!
Movies
Fargo
I loved Fargo, it was clever, aesthetically pleasing and very entertaining.
It hooked me from the beginning with the “based on a true story” note, which stayed in the back of mind throughout and kept me doubting its validity as the plot progressed. I love movies like this, where things spin out of control and everything keeps getting progressively worse.
Furthermore, it was beautifully shot. I really enjoyed the snowy landscape, it felt lonely and isolated at times but peaceful and cozy at others. I think this juxtaposition also existed between the police officer’s home life and the crimes she was investigating. A strong female lead is always a plus, and her relationship with her husband was also really sweet.
Midnight Run
A very fun movie with just the right amount of silliness for me.
An overall entertaining adventure with good action sequences, funny character banter, a kind criminal à la Robinhood, and Robert De Niro being Robert De Niro. What more could you want?
I also really enjoyed the male friendship that didn’t center around hating women, but focused on connecting and being vulnerable. A good bromance, thumbs up!
Ernest & Celestine: A Trip to Gibberitia
This animated film was gorgeous, sweet and thought-provoking.
I loved the soft watercolor style of the animation. Everything felt flowy, organic and delicate in a way I hadn’t experienced before. It felt like a moving picture book.
The characters were adorable - Celestine is my spirit animal. I watched it in the original french with subtitles, and the voice acting was phenomenal as well.
Lastly, it had an anti-authoritarian and pro free artistic expression message, which was an unexpected plus for me.
To Kill a Mockingbird
What an adaptation! I read the book a couple of years ago and loved it, but never knew there was a movie of it. I have been missing out!
This is a black and white movie, and I felt that added more to the film. It felt reminiscent of the nostalgic lens through which Scout narrates the story of her childhood in the book. In general, I think the atmosphere of the book was perfectly captured.
The acting was very affecting, I fell in love with the main characters all over again and got furious and disgusted at our main villain in a way the book hadn’t managed to bring out in me. The tragedy that occurs in the story shook me up more intensely as well.
Video Games
Tiny Bookshop
Lovely game! You get to live the dream of owning a bookstore and recommending people books without stressing about taxes!
You can visit a lot of different locations, as your bookshop is mobile and there’s events and seasonal markets you can take part in. You also get to meet an adorable cast of characters who share parts of their lives with you. And of course, you get to decorate your store!
The art style is cozy, colorful and optimistic, and I loved both the environment and character designs. The depictions of the different seasons of the year was also masterfully done.
However, I think by far the best part of this game is that you get to recommend customers real-world books. Not only is it a very fun puzzle to figure out what they would like based on their requests, but you also get to discover new books you might want to read yourself!
I played this on my Nintendo Switch lite and it ran great.
Camper Van: Make it Home
This game is inspired by Unpacking and I had been looking for a similar game for a long time, so I was excited!
I enjoyed how you could customize your van and get different vehicles throughout the game. All the objects you get to organize and decorate with were adorable, and it’s fun to see all the inventive storage solutions. The locations you get to visit are also very dreamy.
I loved the art in this, it was realistic but magical and a little girly with a lot of purple, pastels and beige.
I think I would have been more enthusiastic about this game had I played it on PC, as the graphics are beautiful and really add to the experience. Unfortunately, I played it on my Switch and the quality there was disappointing.
Stick to the plan
You are a tiny dog, and you carry a stick double or triple your size as you try to navigate tight spaces on different levels. Amazing!
This is a classic puzzle game, in which you need to strategically maneuver through different squares to get to the end of the level. Each new environment introduces new mechanics, which keeps the game engaging. I found it to be just the right amount of challenging.
The art was very cute and silly at the same time. The dog looks a little clumsy, which makes it even more adorable. The different locations and themes were also beautiful and included creative color palettes and lighting conditions.
I played this on my Switch lite as well and it runs great. It was a very fun game to pick up casually and play a few levels.
I think that’s everything for October! Great movies and lovely games. I’ve been getting back into reading, so I’m hoping to have some book reviews in November! 🍁📚
